  • The Trail for Two
  • By: Jaegar Schippa & Thomas Rodriguez
  • One day Steven was walking home from the park, suddenly a stranger pops out of nowhere and steals his crown.
  • “ Hey!” “That’s my crown,” said Steven. “ Yeah, but you can’t do anything about it,” said Ricky. Ricky then eats Steven’s crown. “ I’m going to sue you!” said Steven. “You can’t sue me.” says Ricky.
  • They both realize that they don’t know how to sue or anything else about the court system. Ricky and Steven decide to go on an adventure to learn more about the courts and how they work. As they are walking, they get lost and need directions. They see someone else on the path and decide to ask him for directions.
  • The stranger’s name is Jerry, and he doesn’t know directions, but he has something better. “I can tell you what the three levels of federal courts are.” Steven and Ricky get excited for what they’re about to hear. This is the reason they went on the adventure.
  • “First, there is the district courts, they are the weakest level. There are 91 district courts all across the country. They have the power to see if you are actually guilty or not, this is called Original Jurisdiction.” Jerry said. “Next, there are the courts of appeal, there are only 12 courts of appeal. They check to see if the law and the trial were fair, not if the person is guilty or not. This is called Appellate Jurisdiction.” Jerry continued.
  • “The last level of federal courts is the Supreme Court, they are the strongest. They can use both Original and Appellate Jurisdiction, but they mainly use Appellate.” Jerry finished. “Thank you Jerry.” Ricky said. “Now we know how the federal courts work.” Said Steven.
  • Jerry interrupted them, “This isn’t all there is to know about the federal courts, you’ve still got lots you don’t know.” “I guess we need to learn even more then.” said Ricky. Steven and Ricky were off and on their way to learn even more. They thanked Jerry and left.
  • Steven and Ricky realized that they were still lost and needed directions. They saw another stranger on the path and asked for directions. They ask for directions, but the stranger is also lost. His name is Bobby and he has more information on the court system.
  • “I can tell you how to get a job as a judge. First the President nominates you, then the Senate has to approve it. That’s all that needs to happen.” said Bobby. Steven and Ricky thank him and are off to continue the adventure.
  • Steven and Ricky decide to go back to where they came from so they can get a map. As they are getting closer to where they started, they see a stranger standing in their way. His name is Clarence Thomas, and he is a judge in the Supreme Court. He has come to give them the last piece of information on the court system.
  • “I am here to tell you about the two different types of cases, Criminal and Civil law. Criminal law is when somebody breaks the law and the government makes them go to jail or pay money. Civil law is when someone sues another person because they are responsible for something that happened to them.” said Clarence.
  • “Oh, so me and Ricky are a Civil case?” asked Steven. “That’s right.” answered Clarence.
  • Steven and Ricky were done with their adventure. They had learned everything about the court system. They went back to the park they started at and started a Civil case over Steven’s crown.
