  • Barack Hussein Obama II was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. His father, a Kenyan economist, and his mother, a Kansas native, were divorced when he was two, and he spent his early childhood in Indonesia after his mother remarried an Indonesian geologist, Lolo Soetoro.

  • As one of only three black students at the school, he became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African American . He wrote I went into the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror with all my senses and limbs seemingly intact, looking as I had always looked, and wondered if something was wrong with me.

  • Obama entered Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1979. After two years, he transferred to Columbia University in New York City, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science. After graduating from Columbia University as an undergrad, Obama worked in the business sector for two years. He moved to Chicago in 1985 . He graduated manga cum laude from Harvard Law in 1991.

  • In 2007 Obama won his second Grammy Award for best spoken-word album, for the audio book version of his book The Audacity of Hope (2006); other nominees in the same category that year included Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

  • Diplomat and former presidential candidate Alan Keyes accepted the Republican nomination to replace Ryan. In three televised debates, Obama and Keyes expressed opposing views on stem cell research, abortion, gun control, school vouchers and tax cuts. In the November 2004 general election, Obama received 70 percent of the vote to Keyes' 27 percent, the largest electoral victory in Illinois history. With his win, Obama became only the third African American elected to the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction.

  • In February 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton delivered her full support to Obama for the duration of his campaign. On November 4, 2008, Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain, 52.9 percent to 45.7 percent, to win election as the 44th president of the United States—and the first African American to hold this office.
