  • Mystery: The Gathering
  • "Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?"
  • Tension: Bill Hutchinson
  • Who is it?
  • Who's got it?
  • All right, fellows.
  • Is it the Dunbars?
  • Surprise: The Sacrifice
  • The reason why this scene is a mystery is because it makes the reader wonder what the purpose of the villagers gathering together for the lottery and not reveal what the this ritual is about. According to the lines 93-96 is expresses, "...some people believed that the official of the lottery used to stand just so when he said or sang it, others believed that he was supposed to walk among the people, but years and years ago this part of the ritual had been allowed to lapse." This text circulates that not even the villagers know why or the original purpose of the lottery, but know that it is an important ceremony to the villagers. It also includes the elements of the traditions that have been forgotten or what remains.
  • Foreshadow: Children At Play
  • The reason why this scene creates tension is it leads the reader on more when the ceremony begins and people have different reactions to this ritual, most of them being nervous. According to the story it mentions how the men got nervous when they got a slip of paper and flipped it over, and also when Tessie Hutchinson hysterically protests about Bill Hutchinson "winning" the lottery. This brings up suspense and make it so there is more to it by revealing to the readers that maybe the lottery isn't really what titles itself. Adding more to it when Tessie reacted negatively towards Bill's draw. Telling the readers that what is about to happen won't be good for the Hutchinsons.
  • How this scene creates surprise is it finally reveals what the lottery actually is to the reader, having an unexpected ending towards the plot. According to the text, "Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. 'It isn't fair,' she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head." The text explains the shocking ending to this story, leading on the reader at first about the lottery being something that could reward someone who won, but then hits the reader that it's the exact opposite for the "winning" villager. Having it creating a major plot twist that someone is sacrificed in a brutal and slowly way by being stoned.
  • How this scene creates foreshadowing is by having the children collecting stones and putting them in a pile which will be later use for a violent ending. The text recites children playing in the summer, such as girls talking about boys between themselves, smaller kids playing or sticking by their older siblings while as some collect the smoothest rock they can find, putting them in a pile or in their pocket. This scene makes it feel as if it's just innocent children are at play until it shows the purpose of the stones at the end of the story. Which would also hint that something bad might happen as for it is unusual for little kids to seamlessly collect rocks and put them in a pile.
