- A Couple Weeks Later
- I'm Afsoon, you have to come downstairs, It's urgent
- I would rather just stay in my room but I guess I have to go down
- A what ?!No I refuse
- A khastigar, A suitor. His name is Rasheed.
- you have a suitor.
- We have some very good news to give you.
- Mariam's mother, Nana, warned Mariam that if Mariam ever leaves her alone she will kill herself. One day Mariam left her mother's side and went to her father's neighbourhood all alone. When she came back the next morning she found her mother dead. The vignette shows Mariam in her father's house blaming herself for her mothers death.
- Dad I don't want this, Tell them to stop!
- Now be reasonable Mariam Jo, you have to get married eventually
- I feel terrible but I can't do anything about it
- I've seen 9 year olds given to men twenty years older
- A couple of weeks after Nana died, Mariam is still grieving. One day Afsoon, one of Jalil's wives (her father), comes to Mariam's room telling her she has to go downstairs for something important.
- Why is Mariam so stubborn, I just want her to come to Kabul and live with me
- We will be speeding up the traditions to get married as soon as possible
- I now prounounce you husband and wife
- You can call Rasheed in now.
- Downstairs, Mariam found Jalil and his wives at a long, dark brown table. They announced that they found Mariam a suitor as the wives don't want her to live in Jalil's house her whole life. However, Mariam refuses because of her young age. Jalil sat in disappointment not being able to say anything.
- After what you did to me, I never want to see you EVER again: I can't bealive that I used to worship you.
- I'll come visit you, I promise
- Throughout the night, Mariam sees more and more that the wives want to get rid of her. Jalil sits there in misery, couldn't even look her in the eyes. This event goes on for the rest of night until eventually Mariam gives up fighting. Finally, the wives inform her that the two will be married the next day.
- The next morning, Mariam was given new clothes to greet her soon to be husband: The mullah is there too ready to marry them. The mullah performs a shortened version of the ceremony. After Mariam shakily accepted the ceremony was over.
- After the ceremony, Rasheed waits on the Bus while Mariam chats with Jalil. Mariam expresses her anger towards her father and refuses to make eye contact with him. Her father leaves devastated not being able to do anything.
- I never want to see you again!
