- Leiyla was excited for her first day of kindergarten. She couldn't wait to make new friends and play games and learn new things.
- When Leiyla walked into the classroom, she saw a girl with beautiful curly hair. She ran up to her and touched her hair “Your hair is SO pretty” Leiyla said “What's your name? Mine is Leiyla” The girl stepped away form Leiyla timidly “I’m Maya” she said before walking away.
- That day Leiyla went home kind of sad and her mom asked her what was wrong “I tried to make a friend but she acted like I was stinky or something” Leiyla cried. Leiyla’s mom thought for a moment, “Maybe she's shy. Tomorrow try being extra nice to her '' she said and Leiyla agreed that she would.
- The next day, Leiyla ran up to Maya and hugged her “HI MAYA!!” she shouted with joy. Maya frowned and ran away. Leiyla was very embarrassed and sad.
- Leiyla ran up to the teacher “Ms. Nancy, Maya is being mean to me” she said through tears “Well I can’t believe that” Ms. Nancy said “Maya is one of my most well behaved students” she explained. “NO!” Maya said “she always runs away when I try to play and she never talks to me.” “Well,” Ms. Nancy said “Maya might just be shy, maybe you need to be the leader of the conversation.” Leiyla nodded in agreement “Okay. I will!”
- The next day during play time, Leiyla ran up to Maya and said “Hi Maya, Let’s talk about princesses. My favorite princess is Princess Jasmine because she's so pretty and...” Leiyla talked for what seemed like hours. She was taking charge of the conversation like Ms. Nancy had told her to. Maya sat and listened for a while before she got up and asked away without saying goodbye.
