Ping utilizes the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) to test your device's reachability to a host.Like a submarine it sends out (4) echo request packets to an address.If a host receives the echo request, it responds back with an echo reply packet.

Traceroute is used to trace the path that the packet takes to its destination. Also, it helps find problems such as why and where a connection to a device might be lagging. To differentiate from ping, it pings each router on its way to the destination.
