- Olivia is meeting her boyfriend at a bakery. Before this Olivia had never been to a bakery. Upon entering Olivia is met with the smell of fresh baked bread. It does not elicit any particular response from her, therefore the smell of baked bread is a Neutral Stimulus.
- Once her boyfriend Victor arrives, Olivia feels happy. She smiles and laughs while they talk. Victor is the UCS and feeling happy is the UCR.
- Olivia and Victor begin to go to the bakery frequently for dates. It always smells like baked bread. Now the smell of baked bread is the CS being paired with Victor, the UCS. The UCR of feeling happy is still being elicited.
- Olivia decides to take her dog, Max, on a walk.
- While walking Max, Olivia passes by a house that is cooling some bread on the windowsill. The smell of the baked bread reaches her.
- Olivia begins to smile and feel happy when she smells the fresh bread. The fresh bread is the CS and elicits feeling happy which is now the CR.
