Joe Faces his Fear

- "What is wrong Joe"
- Joe was eating his super-o's cereal at the kitchen table when his mom's cell phone rang. From what his Mom was saying, he could tell that it was his best friend Jeff's mom inviting Joe for a sleepover that Saturday. Joe began to feel butterflies flying around in his stomach. They were from feeling nervous and excited at the same time.
- It is ok to be afraid of new things son.
- When Joe got on the school bus that morning, he quickly took his seat with Jeff. Jeff had a huge smile on his face and Joe noticed he had a gap where another baby tooth had come out. "You lost another baby tooth hey?" stated Joe "Yes, I did. That was my 3rd tooth this month!" Jeff replied and went on to ask "Are you excited to come for a sleepover this weekend? Mom says we can stay up until midnight, order pizza for supper and watch movies!"

- Even though the thought of pizza and movies sounded like tons of fun, Joe had never had a sleepover before and that same nervous feeling returned to Joe's stomach. He smiled as big as could and told Jeff he was very excited to come over.
- PIZZA'S HERE BOYS!
- When Joe got home from school he was grumpy and no matter how hard his Mom and Dad tried to make him smile, he would not. Finally, his mom asked him what was wrong. Joe began cry and said, "I want to go to Jeff's house to sleep over but I'm scared." When his Dad asked what he was afraid of he answered "I have never slept away from you and mom, plus I am scared of the dark, what if Jeff does not use a nightlight, he will think I am a scardy- cat!"
- Mom hugged Joe close to her and Joe's Dad said, "son, it is normal to be afraid of new things, even when those new things are also fun things that you really want to do. You are not a scardy- cat for feeling nervous, but mom and I can help you to make sure your first sleepover is as fun as possible."
- The rest of the week leading up to the big sleepover, Joe's mom read him books about being brave and explained that being afraid of new things is completely normal. The night before the big sleepover, Joe and his mom packed his toothbrush, his pajamas, and his favorite Spider-man nightlight.

- When Joe got to Jeff's house they both ran to check out Jeff's bedroom. Joe was amazed and said, "Wow, you have an awesome gaming setup!" Jeff thanked him and replied that he got it for his birthday.
- The boys were playing video games when they heard Jeff's mom call from downstairs, "Pizza's here boys" the two boys went running to the table for their pepperoni pizza.
- I did not need my nightlight!
- I have had 4 pieces of pizza!
- The two boys ate their pizza and then talked about what they wanted to do next and they quickly agreed on a movie. They brushed their teeth and put their pajamas on and settled in the bean bag chairs for the movie.
- Are you ready to watch a movie?
- They were watching the movie when they feel asleep right there on the bean bag chairs, and they didn't wake up until the morning.
- I cannot believe we get syrup and blueberries!
- When they woke up, they had pancakes with blueberries for breakfast and they talked about their night and how much fun they had!
- This has been so much fun!
- When Joe got home, he told his parents all about the sleepover and how much fun he had. Then his mom asked what Jeff thought of his Spider-man nightlight? Joe looked surprised and said, "I forgot about being scared of the dark! I never even took the nightlight out of my bag!" Joe's parents just looked at each other and smiled and Joe's dad said, "well son, maybe you are not as afraid of the dark as you thought you were."
