  • Standard 4: Democratic Learning Communities
  • february
  • Welcome to our Community!
  • A Safe Space for Learning (4.b)
  • We all get a chance to contribute to group discussions. We listen to each other respectfully!
  • Will you please grab me a pencil?
  • Community Materials & Choice (4.a)
  • I'm going to use a green marker this time.
  • MSU's Portrait of a Teacher Standard 4 is to "Create democratic learning communities that are engaging, caring, respectful, and inclusive". This standard was evident in many ways in Ms. Haggerty's 1st grade classroom at Edgemont Elementary .
  • Distributing Power (4.c)
  • Our special reader can't make it today. I was thinking that anyone who is ready could show us their project. What do you think? It sounds like you like this idea - Let's take a vote.
  • The room arrangement gives students cues about the value of group membership. There are no individual desks, only tables for small groups which are arranged outside a large central rug, at which the whole group frequently meets.
  • Shared Classroom Management (4.c)

  • Children choose materials for learning activities, such as writing utensils, from community supplies. This allows them to each select what they prefer to use while also helping them learn about sharing resources with the whole community.
  • Modeling Interpersonal Skills (4.a)
  • So, we have a problem. How can we fix it? What are some things you could do?
  • When a special guest couldn't make it, Ms. Haggarty asked for input from the group about what to do next. She proposed an alternate activity and gave the group power to decide whether to do that activity or something else.
  • yay!!
  • I'm ready

  • Jobs give students responsibility and ownership in the classroom community, helping them learn to care for their classroom environment and each other. Jobs are rotated so that everyone gets a chance to do everything.

  • Today I'm the Paper Passer: I hand out papers and collect my friends' work. My job is important because I make sure everyone has what they need.
  • Ms. Haggerty is an excellent teacher of the social skills needed for living in a democratic society. She models cooperative skills and respectful problem solving strategies for her students.
  • Mine stopped working!
