  • May thinks about her secret birthday wish of having a sister. Being the only girl born in the whole of the Nasel River settlement means she doesn't have any female friends her own age. She is lonely.

  • May is a bit of a tomboy and doesn't understand why her father doesn't want her to do boy things. May wants to learn how to shoot a gun on the way to Aunt Alice's house in Astoria. The twins are reluctant to agree, but Wilbert backs May up.

  • Alvin and Ivan play a prank on May and switch the cream with cream gravy. Even Wilbert thinks its funny. May says to Aunt Alice "There ain't no gentlemen on the Nasel."

  • The minute I see her, I'm telling Aunt Alice there ain't no gentlemen on the Nasel, so why should I be a lady?
  • To pay May back for helping him with the sheep that were stuck in brambles, Isaiah takes her to see a Chinook Funeral at Baby Island. The Crying Indian his wife and child in a traditional ceremony. They are disturbed when Amelia gets her foot stuck in Karrlo's trap that is nearby and screams. The Indians row her back home and carry her into the arms of her father who is runs to the dock in shock when he sees them approach.

  • May finds Matti hiding behind the house from the girls that are always chasing him. He explains that he is in love with an Irish girl who wouldn't be accepted by their Finnish father.

  • Mamma thanks so much for letting me name Amy and taking care of her.
  • May doesn't like Kaarlo because he is grumpy and bad-tempered and picks on her. May trys to do stuff to get him back. Matti tells her to be kinder to her brother, but she say's he's not her brother anyway. Kaarlo is mad that Matti gets to work in Astoria, because it is something he wants to do. This makes him more mad than usual.

  • I... I didn't realize how hard he was trying to cope with the abandonment of his parents. Now they are dead!
  • Grandma Patience hates May and treats her badly. When May couldn't get the tea exactly how she wants it she gets mad throws it over her and smashes May's precious doll with her cane when May refuses to do it again for the third time. May yells in defiance. Even her brothers don't like the way Grandma treats May.

  • Kaarlo leaves home upset when he finds out that nobody told him his parents and siblings had died of the fever months earlier. The Jackson children feel really guilty and sad after he leaves. May finds him at Jacob Clayton's house next door. May regrets her very long list of mean things she ever did to him and apologies to him to bring him home.
  • Please come back Kaarlo, we just didn't know how to tell you that your parents had died.
  • Arrgghhh!! I gotta get out of here.
  • Amy Alice Jackson dies while everyone is asleep and they bury her on Smith Island. Grandma Patience blames May for Amy's death. May is so depressed and upset she runs to Uncle Henry and Aunt Feenie's house. Pappa allows May to stay there because she refuses to return whilst Grandma is there.
  • She wouldn't have died if that evil child had let me take care of Amy.

  • She'll run to Aunt Feenie's house, she'll be safe there. I'll go with her.
  • Even I know that's Grandma Patience has gone too far this time.
  • May is cold and wet and Aunt Feenie lets them in to get warm. They stay in Astoria and get up to all sorts of adventures. They make lots of new friends. Jalmer lets May and Wilbert stay until they are ready to come home. They come home when Grandma Patience dies and Wendell is sick with the fever. May helps Wendell get better with some Chinook medicine.
  • Grandma Patience has died of the fever and Wendell is Ill too. We need you, please come home now May.
