  • Ashoka established strict laws which implied when doing a minor crime you would experience the death penalty. Ashoka was said to have a massive temper and to be a crual person, which may be the real he treats his villagers with such cruelty.
  • Changing the foundation
  • The kingdom of Kalinga was the last part of India Ashoka had not controlled, mostly because they had been constantly resisting his control. Ashoka had a need to rule and led his army against Kalinga. The Mauryans (Ashoka's army) won, and hundreds of thousands of Kalingans were killed or sold to slavery.
  • New Rules
  • Ashoka later had contact with a Buddhist Monk who had been meditating in the street, dispite of the chaos and distruction Ashoka had caused in this place the Buddhist was happy. Ashoka had a conversation with the Monk curious to know how he was so calm during such a troubling time.
  • Helping Others
  • Thats right guys! You are both doing incredible incorperating Buddhism!
  • After the conversation with the Buddhist he had a realization of what he was causing in his own kingdom. Ashoka became a Buddhist and began a reign of peace and noviolence. He encouraged others to become a Buddhist too, but he allowed all freedom to his empire.
  • Ashoke built thousands of stupa's across his empire, which was a sphere looking structure that contained relics. These structures provided meditation for those who attended. Ashoka's empire experienced peace and prosperity under his new rule.
  • As Ashoka kept a calm and peaceful environment throughout his kingdom, he spent time helping his citizens just like the Buddhists helped him. Ashoka helped with citizenship around the kingdom, such as his pillar and rock edicts which were inscribed with Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism, the description of his efforts to spread Buddhism, his moral and religious precepts, and his social and animal welfare program.
