  • I will show you!
  • Ready to GO!

  • Theodore Judah (railroad engineer) worked with the Big Four and congress for money to build a railroad across America. The Central Pacific (California) and the Union Pacific (Nebraska) railroad companies worked to build the transcontinental railroad.
  • PROCESS
  • Theodore Judah
  • Thomas Durant (vp of the Union Pacific) bet $10,000 that Charles Crocker (boss of the Central Pacific) can not build 10 miles of railroad in one day.
  • Promontory Summit
  • Thomas Durant
  • Charles Crocker
  • Wooden ties had been placed the entire 10 mile route. 1,400 workers had been selected and promised 4x their salary.
  • The Golden Spike Ceremony
  • Stanford
  • 1. Iron Men (8 Irishmen) placed the rails on the ties.2. Chinese crew tossed tools (spikes, nuts, and bolts) onto the ground.3. Another team fastened the rails together.
  • The Promontory Mountains were steep and curvy, so the rails had to be bent. The horses were tired, so the men walked up the mountain. However, the men accomplished 10 miles of track in one day!
  • NEVER GIVE UP!
  • A golden spike was used on the last rail at Promontory Summit to unite the two railroads. This spike had the names of the Big Four.
  • "May God continue the unity of our Country as the Railroad unites the two great Oceans of the world."
