Northeast Geography
Erie CanalThe Erie Canal was a very important waterway in the Northeast in the 1800s. Completed in 1825, the canal went from Lake Erie to the Hudson River in New York, and was a crucial part of the transferring of goods by boat. The Erie Canal took 8 years to build, and working conditions were harsh and dangerous. The canal has since been expanded to be part of the New York State Canal System, and is used mostly for recreational boating.

Rocky CoastlineThe Northeast coastline extends all the way from Maine to Delaware. Formed by glaciers over many years, the coastline consists of capes and islands such as Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Long Island. Since this is a particularly rocky coastline, there are several lighthouses to light the way. The easternmost point in the United States is located in West Quoddy Head, Maine.
