  • Wir werden den Krieg gewinnen!
  • We have taken Nuremberg and won the war!
  • We must punish the Nazis.
  • We need to establish how to try them and what crimes they broke.
  • They committed crimes against humanity.
  • During World War 2 Nazis held huge rallies in Nuremberg, Germany. Nazi supporters would pack into Congress Hall, which sat 50,000 people, to hear Adolf Hitler speak. Uniformed German Military members would march past Hitler as crowds cheered them on.
  • And crimes against peace
  • War crimes, too.
  • On April 20, 1945 Allied soldiers would push into the heart of Nuremberg and capture the city. The United States estimated that the number of casualties was around 145,000. Germany and the Axis Powers would surrender on May 7, 1945.
  • We will each send one judge to preside over the cases.
  • After Germany had surrendered, the Allied Powers had to decide who to punish, how severe their sentencing would be, what they considered to be war crimes, and how they would try rule breakers.
  • The Allied Powers came to an agreement and signed the London Charter of International Military Tribunal on August 8, 1945. They established three laws: crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. This also said that obeying orders would not be a reasonable defense for their actions.
  • They also decided that judges from the U.S, Britain, Soviet Union, and France would preside over the cases. This was the first time an international court was established.
  • One major issue they had to overcome was the language barrier. To do so they would translate in live time using headphones. The stage was set for the trials and they would start with the trial of Major War Criminals on November 20, 1945.
