Süžeeskeem Tekst

  • Camp is very tiring. It consists mostly of drills. People are getting sick, I write letters to family and don't receive any in return, and I feel so drained.
  • African American soldiers for the Union don't get paid any and if we do, it's not as much as the white soldiers. Also, we are targets for the southerners. I feel that we are treated wrongly even after the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • In the hospital things are not going well. There's constant screams of pain and I feel terrible. Some soldiers have taken their own lives. There are many people getting limbs amputated and many diseases are spreading.
  • The food we eat isn't very good. We typically get to eat beans, bacon, pickled beef, dried vegetables, soup, and hard as rock biscuits. We often drink coffee. I really miss good home cooking.
  • You don't want to get stuck in a prison like me. It smells horrific, people are dying, and the food is minimal and disgusting. I sure hope that I can get out of here soon.
  • Battles were brutal. They usually weren't very long but many dangerous things did happen. Many soldiers went to war in the first place because they thought it was a good cause. Most battles were fought in rugged country land. With so much smoke in the air from all the fighting, confusion often occurred. Many soldiers wrote letters to their family just in case something were to happen to them.
