MISSION SAN BUENAVENTURAfounded by Junipero SerraMarch 31, 17829th mission
Here is a drawing of Junipero Serra showing him baptizing Native Americans and you can see the mission chain behind him
Junipero Serra raised the cross at the site in 1782, and the mission was supposed to be the 3rd in the mission chain, but because of unstable grounds, it ended up being the 9th.
Hey! We Chumash were here first!
Get to work digging irrigation ditches and building the mission!
Between 1805 and 1818 the Chumash built 7 miles of aqueducts which supplied the mission with all it's water
The Chumash plowed fields, raised livestock and made bricks. They were only allowed to leave the mission for a few days every year.
The Chumash children were taught Christianity and Spanish.
The Chumash were baptized to be Catholic and could not practice their own religion
Corn
Many crops were grown at the mission including barley, grapes, beans, coconuts, figs and corn.
