- Frederic OzanamThe Founder of The St Vincent de Paul Society.
- A guy by the name of Frederic Ozanam, born in 1813, grew up in Paris. Now at this time, Paris was in the middle of an epidemic and there was a lot of homelessness and poverty everywhere.
- Everyday on his way to university where he was studying law, Frederic would walk through these poorer suburbs. Even though he was only 20 years old, he still got pretty upset by the poverty he saw.
- What can a young guy like me do to help these people?
- Yeah, but what are you going to do about it?
- You're all talk, no action Fred!
- Some other students gave Frederic a hard time about wanting to help others and challenged him to put his faith into action.
- So Frederic got together with his flatmate and delivered a bundle of firewood to an old lady who was struggling in the freezing winter. They simply left it on her doorstep - kind of like a knock and run! This was his first act of charity- and the beginning of the St Vincent de Paul Society.
- I'll tell you what I'm gonna try and do...I'm gonna try and do a little good!
- Sister Rosalie Rendu taught Frederic that it was not just about dropping off some firewood but that kindness and compassion were just as important to those in need.
- Frederic, stop and talk to these people, get to know them...that is how you show compassion.
- Others soon joined Frederic in his acts of charity, helping those most in need in their communities.
- Imagine if we could spread this kindness around the world!
- Named after St Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of charity, the Society is found is over 130 countries around the world.
- Frederic Ozanam showed that we are all, through small acts of kindness, able to make a big difference in the lives of others.
