  • The early stages of rhetoric were all about oral debate. Rhetoric was the term used to when two or more individuals discussed a topic, looking for ways to either further their own point or disprove the opposing side. The prevailing notion was that humans could not achieve absolute truth.

  • As rhetoric inevitably evolved, it's focus on argumentation permeated writing as well. Many rhetoricians, such as Plato, argued that there was an inherent, divine knowledge that humans could access, yet it would be exceedingly difficult to obtain.
  • After the influence of Christianity enveloped most of the world at the time, rhetoric also saw a drastic change. It was now accepted that divine truth could not only be reached, but that the source of this truth was through Christian doctrine taught through the holy scriptures. Rhetoric now focused on how to acquire truth through reading the holy texts, how to interpret these words, and how to properly write.
