- There once was a 24-year-old man named Yoshitaro whose habit was climbing high places like their roof. He was referred to as a madman because of his weird behavior. His father, Gisuke, was always facing the struggle of making him get down their roof everyday because he worries Yoshitaro might get a sunstroke. This time, he told their manservant, Kichiji to get a ladder and ask his son to come down, yet even this didn't work at all.
- Some time later, their neighbor, Tosaku, came to their house. After seeing Yoshitaro high up in the roof again, he suggested the help of a holy woman who could possibly cure Yoshitaro.
- Gisuke was hesitant at first because they've tried prayers before, but still it didn't work. Tosaku told him that the prayers this woman does are more effective because the god Kompira inspires her. Even if he was quite doubtful, he accepted the offer because of his deep desire to have his son cured.
- The priestess said Yoshitaro was possessed by a fox spirit. She addressed the god Kompira, fell on her feet, stood up, and in a different voice spoke declaring she was the god. She ordered them to hang Yoshitaro up on a tree and purify him with the smoke of green pine needles. She also said this was Kompira's order, and if they disobey, they will be punished. Gisuke, though hesitant, ordered Kichiji to do as she said.
- When Suejiro, Yoshitaro's younger brother, saw what was happening, he became really angry and said this was all foolishness. He told them that a holy woman would never do such a cruel thing. He called the priestess a fraud and said she was only doing this because of money. He defended his brother and said he only had a serious mental condition and was not possessed by an evil spirit.
- Finally, everyone learned to accept and understand Yoshitaro's conditon. Still, despite everything, brotherly love still prevails, and it is what makes the family happy and united.
