  • Adichie talks about her encounter with a single story of literature. At age 7 she begins to write her own literature and it consists of white, blond haired, blue-eyed children. She never imagined that people who looked like her could be present in literature. Adichie had a single story of literature.

  • When Adichie was 19 she came to America to go to university. Her roommate was under the assumption that Adichie did not know how to use a stove and that she was poor. Her roommate felt immense sorrow for her, because her roommate had a single story of Africa.

  • Adichie wrote a story for school and her professor told her that the story she had written was not authentically African. Adichie was confused at how she could have failed at ths, but realized that the people in her story were too much like Americans. Americans did not think that African people could remotely resemble them. Again, this professor has a single story of Africa.

  • Adichie remarks that we must ngage with all stories of a particular place. We cannot let one story overrule the rest. The danger of a single story is that is robs people of dignity and emphasizes our differences instead of how we are similar.
