  • Do you remember learning about Cell Theory? I'll start.Robert Hooke was the first person to use the term "cell" to describe the honey-comb shaped cavities in cork. He also worked as a physicist and astronomer.
  • I'll take it from here! Robert Brown was Scottish, and contributed his discovery of the nucleus of a cell to the Cell Theory. He was also a doctor, and served in the Irish army as an ensign.
  • May I add that Rudolf Virchow had his own incredible contribution to the Cell Theory, too? He contributed that all cells come from pre-existing cells, or that cells come from other cells. He held many jobs in his lifetime, including a physician, biologist, and anthropologist.
  • Theodor Schwann was the man who came up with an idea we are all very familiar with. His contribution to the Cell Theory was that all animals are made of cells. You, me, and this husky are all animals, which means we're all made of cells! He was a cofounder of the Cell Theory and taught at the University of Louvain for nine years.
  • Mattias Schleiden first came up with the idea that all plants are made from cells. For example, the plants (wheat specifically) in a piece of bread are made of cells! He was also a botanist and co-created the Cell Theory with Theodor Schwann.
  • In addition to these incredible scientists previously listed, other amazing contributions were made. This includes Zacharias Janssen and his invention of the compound optical microscope, and Anton van Leeuwenhook's discovery of unicellular organisms! The bottom line is, many scientists made important discoveries and these discoveries help make up the Cell Theory.
