Hi , I am Evelynn . I had learnt about the digestive system in my EVS class. The digestive system consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Come with me and let us explore the journey of watermelon slice through my digestive system.
The watermelon is chopped and chewed by my teeth in my mouth (red colour). It mixes with the saliva and becomes mushy. My tongue pushes the food down the throat .
The food then travels through a pipe called the foodpipe or esophagus( pink colour). The esophagus sends the food into the stomach. The acids and gastric juices in the stomach( bright red colour)softens the food and grinds it into a fine paste. The acids in the stomach also kills the harmful bacteria.
The liver(yellow) , gall bladder(green) and pancreas(orange) also help in digestion by secreting some juices .The partially digested food from the stomach enters the small intestine (blue) where it is converted to more simpler substances . These are called nutrients and they are mixed with the blood and transported to all parts of the body.
The process of digestion is completed in the small intestine. The undigested solid waste enters the large intestine(Purple) ,is stored in the rectum and excreted through the anus.
Digestion is a long process and it takes many hours.after digestion the nutrients from the watermelon like sugars, vitamins and water was carried by my blood to all parts of the body and the fibre in watermelon was excreted as waste. Thank you for reading the journey of my favourite food through the digestive system.
