- William Ury, what can we do??
- "In addition to the two sides involved in a conflict, there are important THIRD SIDE roles played by others."
- "For example, in the WITNESS role, the press plays a role making everyone aware of actions on all sides."
- "The EQUALIZER role helps empower the weak and unrepresented."
- "Coaxing a more powerful, but recalcitrant, party to the table... or empowering people through nonviolent action... are examples of this role."
- "The ARBITRATOR can end conflict by making a decision for the parties... "
- "...BUT this requires that both parties jointly select the arbitrator — AND they agree to be bound by the decision."
- "The MEDIATOR can facilitate communication between the parties to help reconcile conflicting interests."
- "If the parties are ready, the mediator can help bring them to the table. Getting them to TALK... and talk some MORE... is very effective."
- ALL of these roles can work TOGETHER on the conflict. Look for opportunities to empower existing Third Siders, or add NEW ones.
