- When Olson got into the Career Trainee program, he felt lucky to be there.He was a part of the Cold War generation who believed that communism wascontradictory to the freedoms and values that America represented.

Olson was intimidated, but he persevered. His fellow cadets had shownup on the first day sporting combat pants and military-style gear, while Olsonhad on a pair of jeans and sneakers, knowing full well that a paramilitarydemeanor was not going to work.
