Good morning class! Today we are learning about gender. Gender is a social construct defining different attributes and roles to different groups of people. Many people associate their biological sex as male or female to their gender as a man or woman, but gender is a cultural idea rather than a physiological one and exists separately from sex on a wide spectrum including gender non-binary, gender fluid, and more.
Gender expression, stereotypes and roles vary greatly from place to place, so today we are going to visit people with other cultural gender identities.
Class, this is . . would you tell us about yourself?
Hi everyone! My pronouns are he/him/his and I am a Burrnesha from Albania.
What is a Burrnesha?
Historically, property was passed down patrilinically so if the male members of a family died propoerty could not be passed on. However, if the daughter had a virgin duaghter than, "she could assume the role of patriarch by swearing in front of a dozen village elders that she would remain celibate for the rest of her life. By this declaration, the burrnesha secured the family estate—and honor. "
