  • The coach Lyddie is riding in gets stuck in the mud. She, along with the other men in the coach, have to pull it out. On page 49, it states, "Then she waded in, her narrow shoulders shoving two gaping men aside as she set her own strong right shoulder against the rear wheel, ordered the men to the rear boot," . The mud was slowing Lyddie and the other passengers down, making Lyddie have to help pull it out.
  • Ezekial tells Lyddie about himself after she meets him in her house. On page 41, it states, "'You talk like a preacher.' He relaxed a little. 'Well I am, or rather, I was.' 'Then you ain't a slave?' 'Some have considered me a slave.'" While society calls him a slave, he himself does not believe he is a slave.
  • Betsy and Amelia fight over signing the petition. Page 91 states, "'Oh Betsy, you wouldn't!'... 'Wouldn't I just?'". Both people are fighting, causing conflict to occur.
