- There once lived a young girl, Mathilde, who always dreams of having luxuries and of a lifestyle far beyond her reach. One day, her husband comes home with tickets to a fancy party and she wants to attend but has nothing to wear. Her husband gives her money to buy a dress but she is not satisfied until she asks a wealthy friend for a necklace.

- She is a hit at the party, and both the wife and husband enjoy to their fullest, especially Mathilde, and after that, both of them return back home.
- They reach home just to find out that the diamond necklace is now missing. In keeping with her unwillingness to acknowledge reality, Mathilde does not tell the truth when she realizes that she has lost her friend’s necklace.
