  • Scene 1: Karen Goes to Math Class
  • Did you guys know that Karen eats dog. Isn't that so gross?!
  • Hey! I don't do that. Take that back. You are being mean.
  • Scene 2: Karen Get's in Trouble
  • No yelling in my classroom! Karen, you must go to the principle's office. You are in trouble.
  • Scene 3: Karen's Classmates Learn by Example
  • You haven't heard about Asian stereotypes? Let me teach you.
  • Why would you say that to Karen? What did you mean by that?
  • In this scene, Karen's classmate is showing prejudice.Prejudice is an attitude that judges someone according to their group's real or imagined characteristics. Stereotypes are part of the imagined characteristics of a group of people. Karen's classmate is showing prejudice through stereotyping.
  • Scene 4: Karen Goes to the Principle's Office
  • Karen, please do not be disruptive during class again. I am gonna guess that you are excelling in math class at least. That reminds me, I must move you up to the honours section of math.
  • Sorry Mr. Renz! It won't happen again. I am doing okay in math. I try to keep up with the homework.
  • In this scene, the teacher is displaying discrimination through differential treatment due to race. While Karen is Asian, Ben is Caucasian. Karen gets into trouble while Ben does not. Discrimination is unfair treatment due to group membership. Discrimination is not to be confused with prejudice. Discrimination is a behaviour while prejudice is an attitude.
  • Scene 5: Karen's Mother Explains Race
  • Honey, sometimes people are treated differently based on their race. This is very wrong.
  • School is an agent of socialization. Socialization is the process of internalizing social norms and ideologies. Social norms are informal rules that govern our behaviour. In this case, Ben is teaching his classmate the ideology of stereotypes. From a functionalist perspective, socialization can be considered a latent function of school meaning that it was not intended. An intended and also manifest function of school for instance, is teaching kids how to do math.
  • Scene 6: Karen has Questions
  • So, is Chinese my race?
  • The principal is showing prejudice through stereotyping and he is also displaying micro-aggression. Micro-aggression is a minor form of racial discrimination occurring in daily interaction. Usually it goes unnoticed by the person committing it.
  • After Karen tells her mother about the details of what happened today, Karen's mother explains the concept of race and how people can be treated differently due to their race. Race distinguishes people into different groups based on physical characteristics. Race is a social construct, meaning it is made up by society and does not have biological basis.
  • Karen's mother explains that ethnicity is not the same thing as race. Ethnicity and ethnic groups are based on sharing language, tradition, culture, ancestors, and customs. Race is purely based on physical characteristics.
  • No honey, that is our ethnicity. Ethnicity and race are different.
