  • In 1066 the king of Medieval Europe, Edward the Confessor, died without an heir.
  • Following the death of the King, a number of people believed they were next in line to rule.
  • One man who believed he was entitled to the throne was Harold Godwinson, the Earl of Wessex. With the power he possessed, he made himself King later that year. He claimed that when Edward was on his deathbed, he promised him that he would be the next king.
  • William, the Duke of Normandy was another contender for the throne. He was also Edward's cousin.
  • William also claimed that Edward promised him the throne while on his deathbed.
  • Later that year at 9am,on 14th October 1066, William's army invaded England challenging Harold for the throne.
  • This historic battle went on until the late afternoon of the same day.
  • Bishops were also among the soldiers of both armies, but were unable to shed blood. They carried bats so they could knock the enemy in the head and break their limbs.
  • It was late into the battle when King Harold was killed after being shot in the eye with an arrow.
