  • Hmm . . . I wonder why there are so many murals in Milwaukee?
  • Oh snap, I know the reason why!
  • Really!? can you teach me about it?
  • Of course! Follow me and I'll tell you about the murals as we walk to the murals.
  • During the Great Depression, a program called WPA was put into place across The U.S to create jobs. Some of the jobs created were for artist. They made murals, Wall hangings, textiles, and even sign designs.
  • Yeah, look! They even had the program Milwaukee Handicraft Project (MHP) where they employed people to make rugs, baskets, tapestries, book bindings, and costumes.
  • Pretty cool right? And after that, the art community in Milwaukee just continued to grow. Murals becoming one of the most prominent forms of public art today in Milwaukee!
  • Where are we?
  • We've made it!
  • Black Cat Alley of course!
  • While this isn't the only place you can see murals in the city, it is one of the best ways to start. They have a rotation of local artist that paint murals here.
  • So this mural is byTia Richardson called "Milwaukee Gaia Buddha"?
  • Yeah! The Mural is of an African American girl scattering seeds, and rising like a Phoenix. She is like a beautiful goddess. Bringing a hope and light to the city.
  • This Mural is "We Are All Immigrants" by Catalina Bayona Colombia. It depicts animals of all species coming together. Sharing the message of unity and hope in the Milwaukee community.
  • This next mural is called "Fraction Mother, Subtract Children" by David Najib Kasir. This mural tells the story of families separated during the immigration process and pushes the viewer to question the political climate.
  • This last mural is by "Jazz Goat" Tim Decker. I just thought it was cool! The mural was created to brighten up a dark alley.
  • Wow! I had no idea how important murals can be in reflecting community values and issues.
  • It's pretty cool! And we have only scratched the surface of it all.
  • Murals are all across the city of Milwaukee and reflect many different views on different topics. Murals are also key in commuticating with the publc because it is a free art galley for the public essentially.
  • Well then, I better get going and see how many murals I can find in this city! I am excited to see the voices of Milwaukee in a visual and impactful way!
