  • The Métis wanted to protest against the government because were struggling;they were too concentrated on building the railway instead of helping the indigenous and the Métis. The Métis noticed that the only person that could help them was Louis Riel. Riel returned to Canada to lead the Métis. He was very religious at that time.
  • Louis Riel formed a second provisional government at Batoche. Riel was named president, and Métis hunter Gabriel Dumont was applied as the commander.
  • On 26 March 1885, the NWMP and armed citizen volunteers were ambushed by the Métis led by Gabriel Dumont. 5 Métis, 9 volunteers and 3 police were killed. Forcing the NWMP volunteers to retreat.
  • I surrender
  • On 1 April, Cree warriors took several Métis prisoners. On the next day, war chief Wandering Spirit shot and killed federal Indian agent. Chief Big Bear tried to stop the violence but he couldn’t ended up killing 8 others including 2 priests.
  • Dumont, 150 Métis and First Nations prepared to ambush the goverment soliders at Fish Creek. They went on a fight. Because it would take almost a day for the Middleton’s troops to reinforce, both sides decided to retreat.
  • Battle of Batoche. Louis Riel wanted to stop the war because he didn’t really want anybody to get killed. There were 900 government soldiers surrounding 300 Métis troops. After a few days, Riel surrendered. Louis Riel was charged for treason. The trail was in Regina. Riel asked for the court. Apparently, the judge sentenced him to death. Riel was executed on 16 November.
