  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • Hester Prynne is on trial for adultery in Puritan Boston in the 17th century. Hester won't reveal the identity of the father of Pearl, her 3-month-old child. Hester's sentence is to live the rest of her life with a red A on her chest.
  • Climax
  • Roger Chillingworth, Hester's long-lost husband, has at last arrived in Boston and is upset. He commits himself to identifying Hester's boyfriend in order to extract his retribution. Hester is sworn to secrecy by him. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, meanwhile, is afflicted with an unidentified illness that appears to be the result of an internal conflict.
  • Falling Action
  • After Dimmesdale's final sermon, which is scheduled to be delivered on Election Day, Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale reunite when Pearl is seven, and they resolve to flee to Europe together. With each passing day, Dimmesdale's illness worsens, and he lays his hand over his heart in anguish. Chillingworth knew about the relationship and strategy of the family. He has a ticket on the same ship as them, which Hester discovers
  • Resolution
  • Many consider Arthur Dimmesdale's sermon, be the best one he has ever given. He delivers it with fervor and renewed energy. In order to accept his role in Hester's adultery and his guilt for not assuming paternal responsibility for Pearl seven years earlier, he closes the speech by inviting Hester and Pearl to stand on the scaffold with him. He rips open his shirt to show a A engraved on his body before passing away.
  • Some locals flatly deny that Dimmesdale had the A on his chest because they cannot believe what they have witnessed. Within a year following Dimmesdale's passing, Chillingworth passes away and leaves Pearl his whole estate, making her extremely wealthy. Soon later, Pearl and Hester go for Europe from New England.
  • Hester Prynne returns to Boston many years later and reclaims the tiny cottage she and Pearl formerly occupied. Even though she is not required to, she continues to wear the scarlet A, and the other women in the community respect and seek her counsel. She passes away in Boston and is interred close to Dimmesdale.
