- The Cask of Amontillado is a story about two people named Montresor and Fortunato meeting at a carnival. Montresor wants to take Fortunato to see Amontillado inside the catacombs. It turns out, Montresor wants to kill Fortunato.
- Montresor decides to seek revenge against Fortunato because he believes that Fortunato has insulted him. The story says "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge." To lure him to the Amontillado, he tries to keep him drunk.
- Fortunato gets locked in the Amontillado. He believes it’s a joke but he dies.
