  • in 1789, while there was a financial crisis was going on, king louis xvi called the meeting of the estates general. the first and second estate wanted to do what they always have done, tax the third estate. the third estate didn't like that, so they are going to do something about it
  • the march on versailles
  • bread! we demand to see the king! we will not leave until the king comes to Paris with us
  • in June 1789, when they found their meeting hall locked, third estate generals moved to an indoor tennis court. there they called themselves the national assembly and swore to never separate until they had a constitution. in 1791 a constitution was created which made the government into a constitutional monarchy

  • on July 14, 1789, about 800 Paris citizens stormed into the bastille, a fortress that was being used as a prison. the citizens demanded the weapons and gunpowder that they believed was stored. the commander refused to open the door and opened fire on the people

  • on October 5, about 6000 women stormed to the king in Versailles because they demanded the king. they shouted bread. they would not go away until they had bread and the king, and his family went with them to Paris

  • on January 21, 1793, king louis xvi was executed by the order of the national convention. after that, Robespierre rose to power. although the government as a republic, he did not like the ideas of monarchy or anything to do with it. anybody who was against him was beheaded.

  • after Robespierre loses power, napoleon rises to power while he is a 20-year-old lieutenant. his military success allowed him to gain more power. in 1804 he gained enough power to become the emperor of France. the French strongly supported him, and he supported the enlightment ideas
