  • Damn Shaun, big event on tonight or what!? Looking good man!
  • No no, decided to pick up some new clothes. No reason behind it really.
  • Looking so good I might have to come over there and kiss you (Mark says jokingly)
  • Hahaha, not if I come over there and give you a smooch first. (Shaun says jokingly)
  • What the heck are you two talking about?!
  • I was complementing Shaun's choice of outfit. As for the other things being said, well those are between him and I haha.
  • Coming from a higher income family, Shaun decides to buy newer and nicer clothing. This displays a status cue, providing a visual representation of his social position to others. In symbolic Interactionism, a status cue can be used to assert authority over others in different social positions.
  • The two jokingly banter about kissing one another, this is a form of subtle competition and assertion of authority during interaction. Independent studies on this type of interaction conclude these exchanges to be competitively driven. This form of establishment is popular within male sports between teammates.
  • Sheesh get a room you two.
  • Aw get over here you! I gotta get going, i'll see you at practice tonight.
  • Cole highlights that he was complementing Shaun's outfit, making him look caring and attentive. This is a form of dramaturgical analysis, displaying himself in the best possible way. Knowing their friend Ashley overheard their joking around, they extend the joke by playing it off as a private matter.
  • Sorry for getting a little close to you earlier. I don't really know what came over me
  • Don't worry about it, all good.
  • All three friends now sitting down, Cole becomes stuck between them and Shaun is sitting in an expansive manner. Body posture is another important factor of social interaction, typically males present a more expansive body language to indicate power and entitlement.
  • Cole takes control of the situation by entering Shaun's intimate zone, using physical touch and body language. Using verbal and physical signals with an intent of a homosexual underlying, he attempts to display his power over the interaction. Like their previous jokes, this form of conversation can be interpreted as a form of competition.
  • Cole admits his competition for attention within their previous conversation by admitting he was trying to impress Ashley. This represents how men typically aim to dominate conversation (purposefully or unintentionally) and masculinity's competitive nature surrounding female attention, seen through social interaction. Shaun may have used emotion management by choosing not to be enraged by his friends actions, thus preventing a fight.
