- After Helen reads "The Pension Grillparzer", she decides that it is good enough and marries Garp.
- It worked!
- The manuscript for Jenny's autobiography was published by John Wolf and became a bestseller. Despite her newly acquired fame, Jenny decides to move home to take care of her mother after her father's death.
- After Helen receives her Ph.D. in Literature and Garp begins his first novel, they have their first child, Duncan.
- Garp becomes a stay-at-home dad while continuing his writing responsibilities and eventually finishes his first novel. Meanwhile, Helen becomes a professor at a local state university and they decide to have another child, Walt.
- At the university, Helen meets Harrison Fletcher, a fellow English professor, and the two couples become great friends. However, affairs occur among the two couples and this inspires Garp to write his second novel, Second Wind of the Cuckold.
- Meanwhile, Jenny hires a new bodyguard named Roberta Muldoon to protect her as she rises in fame.
