Political parties become important to the early U.S. government

Early in U.S. history, there were no political parties. These are groups that mainly want the same things and try to elect people to office.

The first U.S. political party was founded in 1791. It was started by Alexander Hamilton.

In 1854, the Republicans Party formed. By 1860, The party elected Abraham Lincoln president in 1860. Republicans largely controlled the U.S. government from 1860 to 1932.
