  • After Queen Elizabeth dies in 1603 Jame I becomes king. James I believes DRofK. Because James I believes in this it starts a conflict with parliament. This causes money issues, and power issues. James son continues DRofK and the issues with parliament. They limited Charles power and he decides to ignore it.
  • A civil war was created. It was the roundheads against cavaliers. The winner of the civil war was the roundheads. Oliver Cromwell became the leader of the roundheads. 
  • Parliament is purged of king. Charles I was convicted of treason then got beheaded on January 30th, 1649. Monarchy was then abolished. Cromwell eventually sets up military dictatorship. Cromwell ruled until his death in 1658. The army then restores Englands monarchy.
  • In 1660 the son of Charles I (Charles II) was made King, he learned from his father and grandfather. He did not threaten parliaments authority. In 1685 Charles brother James II became king. James was openly catholic and this worried parliament. 
  • A group of English nobles encouraged William of the Orange (ruler of the Netherlands husband to James II daughter) to invade and takeover. James II then fled to France when he realized he had little to no support from England.
  • The revolution was won with almost no bloodshed. In 1689 William and Mary were offered the throne, they accepted that offer. The bill of rights laid a foundation for constitutional monarchy. Monarchy and parliament then ruled together and destroyed theory of Divine right of kings.
