- Alfredo overheard Don Juan and Carmen talking about his wedding plans and the reasons he hadn't already wed Esperanza, his four-year fiancée, while he was in his chamber.
- Esperanza--
- I know about you and Julia Salas. Why don't you tell me you are tired of me?
- Don Julian and Alfredo had gone to Judge Del Valle's house as neighbors. He was a little ashamed to have addressed Julia Salas as Mrs. Del Velle when he first met her. He then came to visit often at the judge's house, and he had fallen in love with Julia, despite being engaged to Esperanza.
- Don Julian invited the judge and his family to Tanda, where he had a coconut plantation and a house on the beach. While Alfredo and Julia appreciate the scenery, Julia says that it will be the last time because she needs to go back to her province.
- Alfredo and Esperanza had a conversion regarding Calixta's loyalty and fidelity. He affirms the justification for craving and preference for honesty. Esperanza quickly admits that she was aware of his relationship with Julia. She encourages him to call off the wedding in order to satisfy his lust and heart's desire. But the wedding goes on as planned, and Alfred gives in to reason.
- Julia and Alfredo met up after the procession honoring the Lady of Sorrows. When Julia learned that Alfredo was getting married, she wished him well. Because Alfredo is currently engaged to Esperanza and must deal with a very major situation as a result of falling in love with Julia.
