- I meet my friend Oxygen in a process called respiration. Oxygen also combines with the carbohydrates and protein that provide the animal energy. Then, I combine with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO2) and I am released back into the atmosphere as a waste product when the animal breathes and exhales, as Carbon Dioxide. The cycle can repeat again here, as I can go and find another plant to absorb me. However, something else can also happen...

- Because I not only am in the air but also Carbon Atoms in organisms bodies, when they die, I go into the soil, and decomposers like fungi, bacteria and scavengers break carbon molecules like me into even smaller molecules and those organisms turn into fossils. During that process the bones that remained gave us (carbon) up to the atmosphere. However, after fossilisation, people turn these dead materials into fossil fuels.
- These fossil fuels are mined and burned in power plants to provide electricity that powers industry, powers transportation of people and goods, and heats homes and businesses. By burning or combustion, releases the energy stored in my compounds in the fossil fuels and reunites me (the carbon atom) with my bestie Oxygen, in the air to form CO2 again. And thus, my day begins once more...
