- Laurie can't handle being in her town because of all the traumatic experiences she had faced with boys, so she made a plan to leave.

- Laurie gets on her plane to Denmark excited, thinking the whole plane ride about whether she made the right choice to leave or not. She would be staying 13 months away from her family in a different country.

- when Laurie got to Denmark, the family spoke in danish and she did not understand. The family sent her to 2nd language school to learn the language so they could communicate.

- Laurie’s parents finally let her go to Denmark for a foreign exchange student program after Laurie begs her parents all night.
- One day, Laurie was taking words she heard fans putting them together. She understood her first sentence! When she gave her response, the family looked at her in confusion. Later she found out that they were talking about a whole different thing.
- When she came back from Denmark 13 months later, she was still thinking in danish. Her family had gone though lots while she was gone. Her grandpa died, and her dad left. Laurie was disoriented from all of it and became depressed again.
