  • It's important for Mexican Americans to understand how their people contributed to America's land as we see it today. People from what is today known as Mexico, and at the time was Cabezza de Vaca, came to explore North America about a century before the British founded Jamestown.

  • This war was fought over territory, where the U.S. ended up acquiring more than 500,000 square miles of Mexican territory from the Rio Grande to the Gulf of Mexico, which outlined the state of Texas
  • This treaty ended the Mexican American War in 1848. To go further into detail, this treaty, within its terms, had Mexico give up 55% of its land. This land that was given up includes present day Arizona, New Mexico, California, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, and Utah.
  • It's important to add him to the textbooks because he can inspire young Hispanic Americans with his high leadership positions in his life. He was the first Hispanic President of Texas Tech University and the first Hispanic member of the U.S. Cabinet, serving as the Secretary of Education.
