  • Claim: In “To Build a Fire,” London argues that man’s hubris and desire to conquer and control proves futile in the face of nature
  • The man decides to challenge the human limits be venturing into the frozen tundra, defying the limits imposed by natural forces in an attempt to prove the superiority of man. He disregards the caution of others and his own body
  • In contrast to the man, the dog that accompanies him respects the power of nature by seeking shelter in the brutal cold, understanding that it is no time to be outside. The dog can be seen as an extension of nature itself, due to its ancestry with wolves, acknowledgment of nature’s power, and relationship with the man. The bond between the man and dog is rudimentary, with the dog being described as a slave to the man. This diction reveals the perceived superiority of man to nature, when in reality the concept of control over another being is preposterous
  • "It's cold."
  • Despite the man’s precautions to avoid the dangers of nature through scouting the snow for water streams, he falls victim to the elements. This ordeal supports the idea that Man doesn’t have control nature because nature is an unpredictable force that man can’t always keep in check
