- The author introduces the story with Andy being stabbed in a dark alley way by a Guardian member on a cold rainy night. He lays there as the Guardian yells a comment about Andy's people as he hurries away. Andy's arms and vibrant purple cloth with bold yellow words; "Royals" had wrapped around Andy's waist, staining a puddle of blood all over him. Unable to call for help, he lays on the sidewalk helplessly in agonizing pain gurgling blood, thinking it will be alright.
- "'I don't want to get mixed up in this. He's a Royal. We help him and the Guardians'll be down on our necks...I'm sorry.'" (Hunter 5)
