- Gilbert is young, he likes to play, and he is also intelligent and likes to study.
- For one, Einstein's theory helps to motivate him, also taking the Limburgher children on trips because his dad was gone and he had nowhere to go over the summer.
- Gilbert's Dad passes away. This makes Gilbert depressed and he thinks about time even more, he wishes he could get his father back. He thinks about getting the handcar to work, making his dad laugh, etc. This meant he was going to try even harder to prove his theory of time.
- Gilbert lives in a house with senor, his teacher, Mrs. Curie, the housekeeper, and his father. In the beginning he is a treehouse with Neils, Emmy, Erwin in the treehouse. In the end, he is riding in the handcar with Emmy, Neils, and Erwin, and time had stopped.
- In the beginning he cared very much about time and he had his dad around, and he wanted to prove that time was a whole another dimesion, at the end he is more relaxed and does not worry about time as much. He is free and with his freinds.
