  • The Stamp Act 1765Cause: A tax was place on every sheet of every legal document. Britain needed money because they were in debt from the war so they taxed the colonists. Effect: Most of the colonist considered it to be a violation of their rights to be taxed without their consent. They also organized the Sons of Liberty and the Daughters of Liberty.

  • The Townshend Acts of 1767The Townshend Acts caused a tax for glass, lead, paint, paper and tea. Cause: Britain still needed money, but they needed a way to tax the colonies ,'without offense.' Effect: The colonist were angered by the tax and boycotted British goods again.

  • The Tea Act of 1773The main purpose was not to raise revenue from the colonies but to bail out the floundering East India Company, a key actor in the British economy. Effect: The colonist were angered by the tax because it seemed to validate the Townshend Tax on tea.
  • The Coercive Acts of 1774Cause: The laws were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest. Effect: The colonist viewed this act as unnecessary and cruel punishment that inflamed outrage against Britain even further. Great Britain hoped that this act would isolate radicals in Massachusetts and cause American colonists to concede the authority of parliament over their elected assemblies. In response to these actions and laws, the colonist banded together to fight back. Several committees of colonists called for a convention of delegates from the colonies to organize resistance to the Intolerable Acts. The convention was later to be called the Continental Congress.
