  • Scene 1: Status
  • Scene 2: Occupation
  • And your bill will be $21.99.
  • Scene 3: Relationship
  • I love you.
  • I love you too!
  • Aiden is a white male that was born into a middle class family in Canada. These are all examples of ascribed statuses, as they are characteristics that are either impossible or difficult to change.
  • Scene 4: Conflict
  • I have an exam in tomorrow and I have not studied...
  • But I'm supposed to go out for dinner with Michelle later...
  • Contrary to ascribed statuses, Aiden is a St. Paul's High School alum, and is currently enrolled at the University of Manitoba. He also works a part time job at a local restaurant. These are achieved statuses that Aiden has attained through his choices and efforts.
  • Scene 5: Strain
  • I DEFINITELY bombed that exam...
  • Aiden is currently in a relationship with his girlfriend, Michelle, who he has been dating since their senior year of high school. This relationship, along with his enrolment at university and his job, make up Aiden's status set.
  • Scene 6: Coping
  • I think it's for the best if we break up. I'm sorry.
  • Okay...
  • However, Aiden's occupations create role conflict, as the expectations needed to be met for his statuses have overlapping demands. HIs status as a student requires him to study and perform well in class. His status as a waiter demands him to be personable and amicable to guests, and his status as a boyfriend requires him to be an intimate partner to his girlfriend.
  • Aiden's role conflict causes him to feel overwhelmed with responsibilities. When he tries to commit to spending more time with Michelle, he notices that his grades begin to decline. Aiden's overlap of occupations results in a lack of free time for himself.
  • What's the solution? In a scenario where a person has too many obligations, one response is to let go of one of them. Aiden obviously can't drop out of university, and he needs to keep his job in order to pay for his tuition and necessities, so he discusses it with Michelle and decides that it's in both of their best interests to split up until Aiden has more time to himself.
