  • In the Middle Ages, sports were played and did occur. There were multiple different sports played too. There were many athletic events at festivals and other occasions.
  • What were the sources of entertainment in the Middle Ages?
  • Some of the sports played were archery, jousting, hammer-throwing, and wrestling. In some of the other areas, they played sports like football (soccer), cricket, bowling, and golf. There were a variety of sports played, but a popular one was hunting.
  • Were games and sports played at a specific place?
  • In the Middle Ages, people enjoyed lots of different games. A popular game of this time period was chess. Chess came to Europe from Persia in the 9th century. Some of the other games included gambling with dice, blind man’s duff, checkers, horse races, and playing cards.
  • Did lots of people participate in the games or entertainment?
  • Art and music were parts of entertainment in the Middle Ages. Some churches had instruments, like organs and bells. Drama began in about the eleventh century. Some of the topics were from the Old Testament (Noah and the flood, Jonah and the whale, Daniel in the lion’s den) and others were stories about the birth and death of christ. They were performed with costumes and musical instruments. For entertainment, people also had feasts, banquets, jousts and tournaments, fairs, games, and sports. All of these things were a big part of entertainment in the Middle Ages.
  • Their dramas took place directly outside the church at first. Later, they were staged in marketplaces, where they were produced by local guilds.
  • People in the Middle Ages loved parties, events, feasts, games, and sports. They would have parties and play games, music, and drinks. They did not get days off but they would have fairs, carnivals, and feasts to celebrate things like holidays.
