  • Gender Identity
  • A lot of people tend to believe that understanding gender, exploring it, or even its overall existence isn't of much importance, they tend to believe its "Y" and "Z" and that's that, theres no need to go further. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. People create and define gender as they see fit and as they deem comfortable to them, so theres no two genders set in stone that people can either be one or the other. Gender is not a choice, not something you wake up to one day, deciding what you'll "suddenly be". People who experience gender identity different from the "female and male" binary don't decide to identify different all of a sudden. They go on for years, exploring themselves in order to find themselves one day. Gender is so important due to the fact that society makes it out to be bigger than you might think, so understanding oneself is a key part of figuring yourself out and where you "fit" in society. Understanding just one more thing about yourself can make things easier on people different from the "usual binary", understanding it and having support, even just acknowledgement, can help save someone's life, and in invalidating, ignoring, or discriminating against them, may just mean life or death. So there are a multitude of reasons as to why gender is important, sure not all may be known or understood, but people need to realize its importance and how much impact it really has on someone.
