  • Hey there! Welcome to Carbohydrate High! Let me show you around.
  • Ooh, look! We found a clique here! Meet oxygen, the hydrogen twins, and best of all, carbon.
  • Each monosaccharide is like this, but there is a clear hierarchy among them as well.
  • H

  • Carbon is the most popular and the cool kid in school. They're natural leaders, and they get along with everyone. Most atoms want to be like carbon, so they stick close to them and follow their lead. They're the glue that holds the monosaccharides together.
  • H
  • O
  • Then comes hydrogen (always comes first in the periodic table, none has ever beat them), and at the very bottom of the hierarchy is oxygen.
  • Lots of cliques (monosaccharides) enjoy doing after-school club activities together. For example, here's 6 monosaccharides all together in the Photosynthesis club! They call themselves the Glucose, and their job here is to provide energy for cells of many organisms!
  • Also, usually we call a group of monosaccharides a class, but the official term would be polysaccharide.
  • When our small close group, a monosaccharide, work together in the classroom as polysaccharides, we tend to get a lot of things done!
  • We help store energy andform structures of living things, in general, but our teachers gives us lots of groupwork and team projects.
  • Here, we have the starch team. They ___. The Glycogen team is in charge of __ . Th cellulose team __. Finally, chitin team does ___ .
